During a study, researchers observed that white blood cells reacted immediately to the physical stress of sleep loss and directly mirrored the body’s stress response. Researchers compared the white blood cell count of several men before and after the period of sleep deprivation. Their white blood cell counts spiked at night, and their day-to-night rhythmicity dropped during the sleep-deprived period. The study adds to previous research linking sleep loss to a number of other health issues from weight gain to high blood pressure to an increased risk of chronic pain and fibromyalgia.

Not getting enough sleep has been linked to a list of mental and physical health issues, including those that stem from an impaired immune system.
