Get Your Fibromyalgia Treated with Chiropractic Care

In a new study, there has been evidence showing that your fibromyalgia can be treated with chiropractic care. We know that fibromyalgia is a long-term condition that causes pain all over your body, so we understand why you are desperate to find help.
There’s been a study done, which involved 120 people, suffering from a severe form of the disease for over 4 years. The participants of the study were between 40 and 65 and they rated their pain as a 4 or more on a pain scale. The people in the study reported that they have limited movement in the neck area or cervical spine.

There were 12 weeks of therapy which included:
  • An education program for a weekly 2-hour session, which gives participants some knowledge about their condition and the options available to help it

  • A 2-hour weekly session of cognitive behavioral therapy, discussing relaxation exercises that could help pain management, flawed beliefs about the disease that cause people to avoid certain treatments, and what actions they could take to ease the painful symptoms

  • Three weekly 1-hour sessions and a twice daily 20-minute session, including active and passive stretches and relaxation techniques

Half of the participants were randomly assigned to the treatment group. They were given upper cervical chiropractic adjustments (high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust to the C1-2 motion segment). This was done for the first month, 3 times a week. It was then reduced to once weekly treatments for the last 8 weeks.

The participants were asked to complete different questionnaires at 3 times: at the beginning of the study, at the end of the study and one year after the study. The questionnaires helped researchers to determine the effect the chiropractic care had on their health and their quality of life. They were asked questions about:
  • Physical function abilities

  • Work days missed due to fibromyalgia symptoms

  • Sleep disturbances

  • Level of pain

  • Fatigue

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

It is apparent that the participants who got cervical chiropractic care, showed significant improvement (15% or more improvement). Their condition was better than the participants who did not have any chiropractic treatment. It was concluded that “adding chiropractic to your current fibromyalgia treatment regimen may offer even more benefits when it comes to getting to the root off the problem.”
