There’s been a study done, which involved 120 people, suffering with the disease in a severe form for over 4 years. The participants of the study were between 40 and 65 years of age, and they rated their pain as a 4 or more on a pain scale. The people in the study reported that they had limited movement in the neck area or cervical spine.

There were 12 weeks of therapy which included:

  • An education program for a weekly 2-hour session, which gives participants some knowledge about their condition and the options available to help it
  • A 2-hour weekly session of cognitive behavioural therapy, discussing relaxation exercises that could help pain management, as well as discussion of flawed beliefs about the disease which cause people to avoid certain treatments and what actions they could take to ease the painful symptoms
  • Three weekly 1-hour sessions and a twice daily 20-minute session including active and passive stretches and relaxation techniques

Half of the participants were randomly assigned to the treatment group. They were given upper cervical chiropractic adjustments (high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust to the C1-2 motion segment). This was done for the first month, 3 times a week. It was then reduced to one weekly treatment for the last 8 weeks.

The participants were asked to complete different questionnaires at 3 intervals: at the beginning of the study, at the end of the study, and one year after the study. The questionnaires helped researchers to determine the effect the chiropractic care had on their health and their quality of life. They were asked questions about:

  • Physical function abilities
  • Work days missed due to fibromyalgia symptoms
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Level of pain
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Anxiety

It is apparent that the participants who got cervical chiropractic care showed measurable improvement (15% or more improvement). Their condition was better than the participants who did not have any chiropractic treatment. It was concluded that “adding chiropractic to your current fibromyalgia treatment regimen may offer even more benefits when it comes to getting to the root of the problem.”

Chiropractic Care for Chronic Fatigue

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is not as straightforward an illness since its symptoms can seem like those of other conditions. An assessment must rule out these other problems to help make a diagnosis of CFS. The process of diagnosing CFS may be slow and exhausting in itself.

Women are four times more likely to be diagnosed with chronic fatigue, and it is more common in people aged 40-60 years old, though anyone at any age can develop this syndrome. CFS may have genetic causes and has no evidence of being a contagious disease.

What Are the Symptoms of CFS?

  • Extreme fatigue that sleep does not relieve
  • Exhaustion that lasts 24+ hours after exertion
  • Lack of concentration, poor memory and headaches
  • Unexplained muscular pain
  • Joint pain without redness or swelling
  • Pain that moves to various joints in the body
  • Enlarged lymph nodes in the armpits and neck
  • Sore throat

Symptoms of CFS create complicating factors in the lives of sufferers, such as depression, missing work, and difficulty with family and daily activities, often resulting in feeling isolated and lonely.

What Can a Chiropractor Do?

Chiropractic care for some CFS patients helps reduce pain and decrease further joint injuries. Your chiropractor may use spinal manipulation to help with CFS symptoms to avoid invasive or pharmaceutical treatments.

With chiropractic treatment, many CFS patients say they feel more energetic and flexible while experiencing reduced pain and joint inflammation, after a series of chiropractic sessions. A recommended course of treatment may take more than one session a week for spinal adjustments.
