What is chiropractic care?

Chiropractic care is a non-invasive, medication/drug-free medical practice that focuses on enabling your body’s ability to work at its best. It’s a health care method that helps alleviate people of aches and pains in various parts of the body. The term originates from chiros and praktikos, Greek words which mean “done by hand,” and that says a lot.

It addresses the underlying issues that are affecting the body, unlike medication which may only offer temporary feelings of relief. Chiropractic care is based on these four important truths:

  • The body is a self-healing, self-regulating organism.
  • According to Gray’s Anatomy, “The nervous system is responsible for coordinating the function of every cell, tissue and organ in the body.”
  • Spinal misalignments (subluxations) are the number-one cause of interference with the body’s innate ability to heal itself and self-regulate through the nervous system.
  • Chiropractic practice is the only one which can locate and correct subluxations via chiropractic adjustments, resulting in the restoration of the self-healing attribute of the body.

What is some general information I should know about chiropractic treatment?

Chiropractic treatments are usually a combination of both spinal adjustments as well as other manual therapies, which may include things like relaxation techniques, rehabilitative and general exercise, electrical stimulation, heat and ice treatment, dietary supplements and counselling about diet, weight loss and other lifestyle factors.

What is to be achieved by all of this, you might ask? Well chiropractic care’s goal is to increase your body’s range of motion in the area being treated and to help boost your health.

What should I expect from chiropractic treatment?

There are a number of things you can expect when you undergo chiropractic treatment:

  • Since chiropractic treatment is mostly focused on spinal manipulation, you should know what conditions spinal manipulations can benefit. They may benefit people with lower back pain, headaches, neck pain, upper and lower-joint conditions, and whiplash.
  • You may experience some temporary side effects when you undergo spinal manipulation, including things like discomfort, headaches, and tiredness; however, the entire spinal manipulations are very safe.
  • It’s a good idea to reveal to your chiropractor any complementary health approaches you may have.

How can I get best results from my chiropractic treatments?

There are a number of things that you can do to get the best results from chiropractic care. Check them out below:

  • Always stick to your treatment plan so that you can consistently improve the condition of your body over time. Remember, your spinal issues did not happen overnight so your healing process won’t either.
  • Instead of lying flat with a pillow pushing your head forward, ensure that your spine is flexed from the waist, with your neck properly supported and your ears in alignment with your shoulders.
  • Bend your elbows and knees at 90 degrees when sitting at a desk and plant your feet on the floor directly below your knees. Keep your computer at eye level.
  • If you have a wallet, put it in your front pocket so that it doesn’t add strain to your lower back and irritate the nerve flow. If you have a purse, switch it from shoulder to shoulder and try to keep it as light as possible.
  • Exercise regularly to maintain your endurance, flexibility and strength.
  • Do deep breathing. Inhale and hold it for as long as you can, then exhale as much as you can. Do this 5 times as you wake and before you go to sleep.
  • Drink a lot of water daily to remain hydrated.
